blank Barlow Flower Farm A two-year-old 10,000 square-foot X.S. Smith glass house is just one highlight at this 25-year-old, single location operation. New this year is a year-round holiday room. Some keys to this company's profitability ($3.6 million in sales annually) include buying directly from vendors, branding the name of the store on point-of-purchase materials and even pots and tags, and a number of revolutionary marketing ideas.

One such idea is giving coupons with information about free classes and seminars that apply the day of the event. "In this way, people are encouraged to spend while attending a function," writes co-owner Stephen Barlow III. "We give additional discounts for customers to purchase online with the hope that it will increase sales. We are beginning to see results from this newly established online campaign. We give bag stuffer coupons with future dating that gives a discount with a future visit. We have seen a good return." Barlow Flower Farm

The customer discount T-shirts has continued to be a successful program. A customer who wears the Barlow's shirt into the store gets a 15 percent off discount for every non-sale item they purchase. The shirts are purchased in February and they are good until the end of October, so they're only good for one season.
