This year Boulevard Flower Gardens rated as one of Today's Garden Center's 100 Revolutionary Garden Centers Regional Winner. That means they scored the highest of all the Southeast garden centers on the list. This one-location operation is an efficient, profitable business, pulling in $2.75 million on a 1-acre site in Colonial Heights. The 51-year-old business has created custom-print tags for several plants, including the popular Boulevard Fern hanging baskets for which it has become famous locally.
"We promote these for early April sales and sell 2,000 of these, each at a premium price," writes co-owner Mark Landa. "People look forward to this each year."
The new Counterpoint POS system installed this year has allowed easier transactions for credit and debit cards, as well as gift cards. "We are downloading electronic catalogs from our vendors and past product purchases, creating our own item numbers, which are quickly identifiable to department managers, identifying specific vendors and departments."
Boulevard also pools with other grower/retailers who are not in the immediate area to increase quantities when buying or do full containers of products from overseas. Large quantity purchases are bid out among several vendors.
