This 39-year-old, 5-acre retail operation is involved in its community, and participates in a half-hour how-to pond building show on local cable stations as a way to reinforce its position as the go-to guys.
Employees are trained via informal daily sessions in the yard, as well as through vendor conferences and in-store training with vendors. It has been especially aggressive in offering a 2-year shrub guarantee with tie-in sales of planting media, an idea learned "through the invaluable experience of networking," says respondent Frank Fernicola Jr.
They use The Retailer by POS Systems to track inventory, compare sales figures and implement a customer rewards club.
Fernicola Jr. says the biggest mistake in retail he's made is not "opening my eyes sooner to all that is out there in retail and now taking the steps to learn more and network to help me better understand the future of the industry and our store."
