Wallitsch Garden Center, Louisville, KY
This garden center, which has been around for 61 years, employs the 'wow' factor to get its customers to keep coming back.
"We make sure the reality of our garden center matches the hype of our advertising," writes co-owner Mary Wallitsch. "In other words, we go for the WOW factor in our advertising and then carry it through so that we have credibility with the customer. We challenge ourselves to be the cleanest, neatest and best laid out center. We create displays both inside and outside at the entrance to draw customers in."
The retailer uses an open-to-buy plan, as well as its CounterPoint POS system to track gross profit by category and item. The POS also customizes sales receipts to help cross merchandise. The retailer buys smarter by watching inventory returns, getting "just-in-time" deliveries and buying seasonally.
