Cornell Farm isn't your traditional garden center, in setting or layout. It's an urban garden store on a farm with a historic farmhouse on the property. None of the plant material is displayed alphabetically. Instead, everything is displayed by use, inspiring the customers. The garden center also has a strong commitment to sustainability, offering a wide range of organic and earth-friendly products and working to become more sustainable in its own practices. Cornell Farms uses compact fluorescent light bulbs, takes back plastic pots from customers for recycling, offers composted material for customers, cleans with organic and earth-friendly products and recycles everything from cardboard and Styrofoam to metal, wood and glass. Cornell remains profitable 12 months out of the year by planning special events during the slower months and making sure it has a proper staff to sales ratio. Monitoring inventory is also key. Cornell reviews best seller reports on a weekly basis to determine what exactly needs to be ordered, as well as looks at history to determine future seasonal purchases. By reviewing history, Cornell is reminded of items that might otherwise have been forgotten in seasonal buys.
