Goebbert's Embraces The Seasonal Nature Of Garden Centers

Goebbert’s Farm & Garden Center in South Barrington, Ill., takes being a seasonal business to the extreme. It transforms itself into a different type of store for each season.

Here’s how Holly Peterson, market manager at Goebbert’s, describes it:

  • “In the spring (Mid April through June), we grow 80 percent of our annuals, 50 percent of our perennials and 90 percent of our vegetables. We provide a custom planting service as well as delivery and tree/shrub planting and have a variety of products that allow you to be a green gardener.
  • “In the summer (July through September), we transition into a fresh produce farm stand where we grow almost 100 percent of our vegetables, our melons and we purchase our fruits as locally as possible. We also have a great selection of various country store products like jarred goods or local honey and popcorn.
  • “Our final season is fall which runs from the last weekend in September through October 31st. We bring in over 55 different types of animals, from your farm favorites to fun exotics. We even built a giraffe barn that you can walk up and be at eye level with these amazing creatures. We have a haunted house, Red Barn Café & Bakery, pony rides, Camel Rides, Wagon Rides, Homemade Fudge, Homemade Kettle Corn, Corn Stalk Maze, Pumpkin Eating Dinosaur, roasted corn and all our pumpkins are grown out at our farm in Hampshire, Ill., and are trucked over. We make our own apple cider donuts fresh daily and provide a great fall family experience to our customers.”

This carries through to its website. When customers arrive at Goebbert’s website, PumpkinFarm.com, they select whichever season it is currently and the store location the customer is interested in. Customers will be taken to a different site depending on which season and location is selected. In spring, the left menu offers expected, plant-oriented categories like annuals, perennials, etc. In contrast, the fall menu has items like Fall Harvest Market and kettle corn.
